Bear in Mind explores the complex and overwhelming nature of my relationships with my sisters. The relationship is founded on a basis of love and gratitude for all they have done and continue to do for me while acknowledging the years of jealousy and loneliness I have faced. Having a different dad and subsequently a different last name from a group that shared those things taught me an early lesson in isolation and coping with it.
The pieces manifest this tension in my feelings through a tension within the components of the works. The hardness of the line and solemness of the figures within the prints exist within direct contrast to the soft and colorfully felted frames. The use of repetitive imagery works to convey the way in which I see myself: as a reproduction of all of them in one.
The unifying component of all of these pieces is the surrealist landscapes in which they inhabit. By building this space, I create a world in which my conflicting emotions can coexist without competing. This series is a means of exploration of my infinite gratitude for my sisters and understanding how our differences have also been integral in shaping who I am.
